What's the difference between luteal stim and DuoStim?

This is a sample of how Seia answers — the distinction, a cycle timeline, and the evidence with the date it was last checked.

Luteal Stim vs. DuoStim

Often conflated

Both involve stimulating during the luteal phase — the stretch of your cycle after ovulation. What separates them is how many stimulations happen, and whether they're packed into a single cycle.

Luteal phase stim

One stimulation, started after ovulation instead of at the usual follicular start.

  • Luteal stim is a timing. DuoStim is a protocol that uses it — as its second half2
  • The rationale is the "wave" model: antral follicles emerge in waves across the whole cycle, not only the follicular phase1,4
  • Both were first used for urgent fertility preservation, where waiting for the next cycle wasn't an option — then extended to poor responders2,4
  • Within DuoStim, the luteal round yields similar numbers of mature eggs and euploid blastocysts to the follicular round3,6
  • The luteal round adds meaningfully to total blastocyst yield, so more people reach a transfer inside one cycle5,6
  • Long-term safety data on luteal-phase eggs is still thin — this is an open question, not a settled one6
If your clinic has raised either of these, it usually means they're trying to get more out of one cycle rather than several. It's worth asking which of the two they mean — the answer changes your calendar.
